Chapter 1 | Pre-Lantic

Welcome to this, our very first Lantic blog post My name is Alex, Founder and distiller. Together with my dog & Co-Founder Bentley we’ve been distilling since 2018, and in that time we’ve been working hard to make Lantic Gin the best it can be.

Being self taught we are proud that Lantic is now a globally recognised, award-winning gin.

So we thought it was about time to share a bit more of our story.

In the upcoming newsletters I’ll reveal all about how Lantic came to be, what makes our gin truly unique and of course plenty of inspiration for cocktail recipes and Cornish explorations. From dog walks to the intricate bottle we now pour from.

Today we’ll start at the very beginning, what we’re calling Chapter 1. Settle down with a gin & tonic (of course!) and we’ll begin.

Alex & Bentley

As an outdoors lover living in Cornwall, I realised on one of my many coastal walks with Bentley, the incredible flavours available right on our doorstep. The aromas, the smells and how they change throughout the year.

Even more incredible, was that no other Cornish gin was truly tapping into that: both the flavours and the seasons that are unique to Cornwall.

Bringing back childhood memories of picking fruits and berries from the hedgerows, I was compelled to craft my own gin. I set about researching in all kinds of ways - where does one find a copper still, or a recipe?

Some of you might already know gin is a notoriously secretive world, with many recipes kept under lock and key, or even in the heads of master distillers. It became clear after talking to many people, and becoming lost in craft spirit forums, that in order to capture what Bentley and I loved most about Cornwall in a gin, we’d have to work it out for ourselves.

And so we entered our phase of experimentation. That’s Chapter 2, next time.
